In the last 3 days motorists have received conflicting information from authorative sources stating that “speed camera cuts threaten lives” while opposing headlines quote “ speed cameras caused 28,000 accidents in a decade”.
So who are we actually to believe?
The first quote above is attributed to Gwent Police Chief Constable Mick Giannasi who obviously has a vested interest in these speed cameras as they provide a very lucrative revenue stream to his and other police forces.
The second quote above comes from the Liverpool Victoria insurance company, this follows a poll by ICM which revealed that speed cameras contribute to 1% of all road accidents.
Dept of Transport figures estimate the number of crashes since 2001 at 2.7 million, therefore on the basis of a 1% factor of road cameras causing some of these accidents that amounts to 27,900 accidents involving these cameras.
So there we have it, while all accidents bring misery to someone, we have one side with official figures to back their argument, while the other side with a vested interest to protect do not wish to see their very lucrative cash cow disappear.
A typical British stand-off.
