After all the “yes he will” and “no he won’t” of the last few weeks, just over an hour ago at the Mercedes base in Brackley, Northants, Michael Schumacher signed up for the next Formula1 season.
The 7 times world champion has signed a 1 year contract and will have Nico Rosberg as his team mate.
His new Mercedes team, formerly named Brawn, brings him back into partnership with Ross Brawn who oversaw all 7 of his world title wins, first with Benetton 94-95 followed by 5 with Ferrari from 2000-04.
Schumacher’s consultancy contract with Ferrari has now been cancelled.
The only driver in recent times to come out of retirement and win a world title was Austrian Nicky Lauder in 1984 after 2 years away, Alain Prost tried it but was reportedly never the same on his return to racing.
To get the Mercedes dream team of Schumacher and Vettel racing together they will have to wait until the end of 2012 until Vettel’s contract with Red Bull expires.
Where will Michael be then?
