The discussion about whether elderly drivers should retake their driving tests may have been laid to rest by the RAC Foundation.
The RAC report states that retesting elderly drivers would do very little to reduce the number of UK road accidents.
The report did state that there could be benefits in encouraging elderly drivers to have “refresher driving training” but this should not be compulsory as it could raise the fear in the elderly population that if a test was failed they would be in danger of losing their independence.
There is also a question of whether official re-testing of the elderly would be in breach of equality regulations.
