Adding to the hopes that Britain could be a major hub for green motoring with a better environment due to less carbon gas emissions Vauxhall Motors today indicated it could build their new electric Ampera model there.
With Nissan planning production of its electric Leaf model in Sunderland where it will also produce all the electric batteries required and Ford planning to spend over £1.5billion on cleaner engines the job prospects in the new green UK motor industry look good.
The UK government has already made a commitment of £5000 to buyers of low carbon gas emitting electric/hybrid cars here but Nick Reilly, head of General Motors Europe, is looking for further incentives to build the Ampera in the UK to help fleet buyers.
Mr Reilly has already indicated the plant may go to Spain or elsewhere if better incentives are available there. It is now time for the UK government to put its money where its mouth is, even in these hard times, and look to the prospects of a cleaner environment and more jobs in the future.
