1st car - what should I buy?

I'm 19 and I passed my test over a year ago. I've been driving my Mum's Fiesta but I really want a car of my own now.
I've got a grand saved up, and Mum and Dad and my gran said they'd add in £500, so I've got 1500 big ones to spend!! Woot!!!! I'd mainly use it for getting to work and some gigs (I'm a bass player in a band) so something like a Smart car wouldn't really work as it's too small for my gear.
Any recommendations?
Have a look at www.mobiya.co.uk. There's usually a good selection of cheap vehicles included there. It all depends where you live really.
