What Goes Up Must Not Come Down

Throughout the history of roadside speed cameras the police and local authorities have always maintained that the cameras are positioned to deter accidents and not solely for revenue purposes.
That claim has now been shot to pieces.
Essex police and Essex council originally refused an application under the Freedom of Information Act to disclose the number of speeding tickets issued by a particular camera on the M11 between junctions 5 and 4 where the speed limit drops from 70 to 50mph.
When forced to reveal the figures it transpired that since 2003 the average number of speeding tickets issued annually is over 9,000 which amazingly equates to £500,000 per year.
What is most controversial about this particular camera is that in the 5 years before it was installed there were 13 accidents and 14 casualties in the area, however in the 5 years following its installation the numbers have gone UP to 16 accidents and 24 casualties.
Essex police have refused to remove the camera and state it is not being kept for revenue purposes only whilst blaming the poor driving of motorists as the cause of accidents.
Do you believe them?
