Ford’s Inflatable Seatbelts

Author: TheCarHubTeam

Ford of America will have a “world first” next year (2010) when they introduce their new inflatable seatbelts.
Testing has been carried out for using the new belts on rear seat passengers, these are most likely to be children or parents.
One big advantage of the new seat belts is in the increased body area they will cover which will be 5 times that of a normal belt, therefore spreading out the pressure when the air bags are inflated.
These new belts will be worn as per normal belts but the gas used to inflate the bag section will not be the normal heat generating gas used for rapid inflation of the car’s safety air bags but a slower inflating un-named cold compressed gas, this slower reaction should eliminate head, chest and neck injuries to the old and young and any danger of friction burns.
The first Ford models to have these belts fitted will be the Explorer SUV’s in the U.S.A., Ford of Europe will be making them available as an option from 2011.
