Everyone should have car insurance to be legally on the road, question is when do you really know what kind of insurance policy you have bought.
A word of warning here, when filling in your proposal form, even if only requesting a quote be honest about the facts, if you’ve told any porkies and you later have a collision, if your policy information is not correct your insurer could inform you that you have invalidated your insurance.
This could then leave you to face the police on a charge of driving without insurance and also having to pay from your own pocket for damage done to other vehicles or property.
Before buying your car insurance there are several factors to be considered such as what is the value of your car; don’t bother trying to quote an over valuation as the insurer will only pay out “book value” if there is a claim
What mileage are you likely to do p.a., the less you state means the less time you’re on the road which could lead to a reduction in premium.
How old are you, for the young inexperienced driver those first years of driving are going to be expensive by way of premiums. Always remember, with all insurances everything is calculated as a risk and young drivers, like it or not, are high risk.
At the other end of the scale, more elderly drivers, as long as they have clean licenses will have much reduced premiums mainly by way of a “no claims bonus” because of past safe driving, this is what young drivers should aim for.
Not least of all is the actual car you drive, from an insurance point of view every car is classified under what is known as the ABI group, which in official jargon states “a ranking assigned to each car based on its potential risk”
Has it ever crossed your mind to discuss your insurance needs with your agent/broker? Have you any other form of insurance with any other insurance company?
Taking the above last point first, just by approaching a broker you already have insurance with could earn you a 10% discount as a regular customer. Your broker may also know of any current discounts being offered which could again lead to a further reduction.
Finally perhaps you might even consider exchanging your current high powered car for something with less muscle which again could lead to a reduced premium.
