To get the existing car scrappage scheme moving the government put into the pot £300 million and said when that is all taken up the scheme will end. It seems pretty certain now that the scheme has been successful but with the money due to run out possibly at the end of next month (Oct.) there is some pressure being put on the government to refill the money pot. Should they do it? Why provide support for only the car industry? It may sound a bit controversial to demand the closure of the scrappage scheme but have a think about it. Firstly one of the major problems with the scrappage scheme is that all those old cars being scrapped are taking tens of thousands of spare parts to the smelter, these old parts, which for some who don’t want to scrap their cars will mean the only car they can afford and are now trying to maintain will slowly be unfairly forced off the roads; it will also deprive classic car enthusiasts of the means to preserve our motoring heritage and their very interesting pastime. So how do we ensure continued new car sales, help the second hand car market regain it’s position and future car rebuild enthusiasts, answer- free money. Those financial people, who we kindly taxpayers have just saved from near certain extinction, should heed what customer surveys have revealed and offer 0% interest for new car buyers; the whole car market would then receive the biggest kick-start it could possibly have. The above is not rocket science, it is answering what the customer wants, will help all sides in the equation and help us all to get some feel-good factor back into our lives
